WINTRY MIX

There are six short stories in WINTERY MIX that I hope you will enjoy:

Hard Lesson: A former teacher struggles to redefine his life when all seems lost. Accused of a horrible crime Bill Anson has nowhere to turn except inside himself and hope for redemption.

"Grant landed next to my foot and looked up at me. I could have sworn he winked. When I palmed that fifty I pretended it would be okay even though I knew, deep inside, that it wouldn’t be. Free money never is."

Going, Going, Gone: The boundaries of morality are pushed to the limit in the exotic animal trade in Miami. Rich and idle, Jackson Delray's world is turned upside down by a vegan eco-warrior on a crusade to bring down Delray's empire of animal cruelty.

"Jackson told himself and anyone who would listen that he was only sorry he could not have helped the unfortunate soul on the motorcycle who had caused the accident. Called a hero, Jackson came out of it smelling like a rose, as was always the case. He was not like other people. He was special."

The Wrong Arm: A centuries old mystery collapses on top of a farmer from Maine forcing him to Italy to resurrect his father’s good name. Before he even knew what had happened Sam Sawyer was in love with a beautiful stranger and on the run for his very life.

"At close to nineteen years old, Sawyer was mature beyond his years. The horror and death of war tends to do that to bright-eyed young men. He was not a big man, nor was he very mean. Both were strikes against him in the world he found himself in."

Monkey's Branch: What seemed to be a simple shortcut in life turned deadly in an instant plunging a good man into a flight from justice and a fight for survival in the jungles of Brazil. Newport Rhode Island is a long way from the Amazon River Basin, especially when it is an unplanned adventure.

"Rinsing the wound in the muddy river cleaned out the sand. I hoped that this would prevent the infection from getting out of control. Keeping the bugs off of me and out of the cuts was much more difficult. They were on me like sea gulls on a Point Judith dumpster."

Piscataqua Shift: A quiet seacoast town in New Hampshire is rocked with scandal and unbridled greed. Sometimes determining who the good guy was isn't so easy, even when they are wearing the appropriate color hats.

"Lieutenant Simms had a hangover. It wasn’t as bad as the day before, but much worse than the day before that."

A Panther In Hyannisport: Even the fabled summer of love had moments of pain, anguish and secret racism on idyllic Cape Cod. Coming of age when you have everything in a world of privilege and ease does not really prepare you for how quickly it can all go away and how difficult it is to get back.

“Griff's hand slipped off the transom and he fell back into the water. I ran back and we both grabbed a piece of Griff, pulling him into the tiny Boston Whaler. Blood flowed down his face after whacking it off the back of the boat. I could smell the dead fish and rancid lobster bodies getting closer as the huge lobster boat bore down on us. I wanted to scream. Griff was in the boat and Billy was pulling the slack line away from the prop as I nearly bent the key in the ignition to start the motor.”
